CAPITAL WOODCARVERS ASSOCIATION OF SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA (Established July 1972
CAPITAL WOODCARVERS ASSOCIATION (CWA) is a tax exempt woodcarving club organized to promote the art of woodcarving and improve the skill of its members. There are currently approximately 100 members in good standing who meet on the second Wednesday of each month for business, and on the fourth Wednesday of each month for carving demonstrations and group projects. During the summer months, both meetings are carving days. Business meetings resume in September. Approximately 20 members attend the business meetings, and 25 members currently participate in the group carving day projects. Both of these club meetings run from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Woodcraft Shop, 9523 Folsom Blvd, Sacramento, CA, 95827.
For the most part, carving is performed with small, sharp hand tools with carvers seated at work tables. For safety reasons, carvers must be age 18 or older. Younger carvers may attend if they are accompanied by an adult.
CWA sponsors and hosts a two-day (weekend) annual exhibition and judging show, which is usually held on the third weekend in May in the Scottish Rite Masonic Center on H Street in Sacramento, CA. The 2018 Show will be held on the weekend of May 19 & 20. This is a public show where carving competition winners are exhibited, raffle prizes are awarded, refreshments are provided for sale and carving skills are demonstrated by CWA members as a means of interesting potential new members into joining the club. Show activities sometimes include demonstrations of chainsaw carving, the turning of small objects on wood lathes, and mallet and chisel carvings. Weekend attendance at the show averages around 1500 people. For the past two years, we have included gourd carvers in our show; a wonderful addition to the show.
CWA sponsors weekend Major Seminars taught by nationally known carving/artist instructors, and student capacity is limited to (12) twelve. On the average, there are approximately 2-3 seminars in a year. Sign-ups are on a “first come/first serve” basis. CWA also sponsors Saturday one day Mini Seminars conducted by club members with advanced skills in a variety of subjects, e.g., tool sharpening, wood painting, chip carving, Santas, Little People, etc. Mini Seminar attendance is not usually limited, and fees are minimal.
CWA sponsors a group carving session and potluck on every Monday at Shirley Coffelt’s private shop on 4651 Moddison Avenue, Sacramento, CA, 95819 from 2:00 p.m. to around 6:00 or 7:00 p.m. You are welcome to stay as long as you want. Participants work on a project of their choice and share carving information and skill development techniques of mutual interest. There is also a potluck for those who are interested. Coffee is always available at a nominal fee. This is a chance to share good talk, good food and lots of carving information with creative and talented people, in an informal atmosphere.
To join CWA, the cost is $25 per year for one person, and $30 per year for a family. Membership application is attached. CWA membership app. Rev 2016
CWA has a monthly newsletter, The Sacramento Shavin’s, that is emailed to club members each month.
Each year, there is a CWA potluck picnic and a catered Christmas party and gift exchange of hand-carved gifts.
